United States Patent 6,982,247 - January 2, 2006 - Antimicrobial protein isolated from complex secreted by snails.

This invention relates to compounds with antibiotic activity which are gathered from body fluids of snails, to therapeutic drugs comprising these compounds, and to the use thereof for the preparation of a therapeutic drug for controlling infectious pathogens in humans and animals. The patent specifies that an antimicrobial protein isolated and identified from the yellow mucus of the foot soles of a species of snails can be utilized against a broad range of infectious pathogens.

The antibiotically effective compounds according to the invention can kill bacteria, parasites, viruses and other infectious pathogens upon both external and internal administration. The infectious pathogens against which the compounds are effective are those which cause gastro-intestinal symptoms, those which attack inner organs via the blood, and those which lead to open wounds in the skin.

The antibacterial effectiveness is demonstrarted by bioassays using bacterial isolates freshly isolated from infected and hospitalized patients. An antibacterial-bactericidal effect was established, inter alia, against the Gram-negative species Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the Gram-positive species Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.

United States Patent 6028061 (2001). - Inhibition of Angiogenesis by a Glycosaminoglycan isolated from snails.
Assigned to Children's Medical Center Corp (Boston, MA); The University of Iowa Research Foundation. This is for the use of a complex glyco-molecule (acharan sulfate) isolated from the body, and also present in the mucin of the snail, as a drug to inhibit angiogenesis: the development of new blood vessels.

The same inventors are requesting a new patent for the use of the same molecule for the treatment of cancer and inhibiting an increase in the volume or mass of a cancer tumor (2005). U.S. Patent Application 20050075312, April 7, 2005 provides pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of cancer and inhibiting an increase in the volume or mass of a tumor, and methods for the treatment of cancer and inhibiting an increase in the volume or mass of a tumor. The invention is based on the discovery that acharan sulfate demonstrates in vivo anti-tumor activity. As used here, acharan sulfate means a glycosaminoglycan from the giant African snail, Achatina fulica.

The discoverer of a naturally occurring healing complex cannot patent the phenomenon

It is worth noting that the biological ingredient in BIOSKINCARE, and in all our BIOCUTIS products, is the WHOLE secretion of the snails, as it is collected directly from them, not a molecule separated from the complex or a part of it. The secretion, as it is, has biological functions that protect and benefit the skin. And those can not be patented. For the discoverer of a naturally occurring manifestation —such as an element, chemical, or mineral— cannot patent the phenomenon.

Eczema & Diet

-Identify food allergies and eliminate the offending foods from you diet. Eggs, milk, cheese, chocolate, peanuts, soy, potatoes, and the glutens in wheat are common allergenic foods. It will take four to six weeks for the results of an allergen-free diet to be observed, so be patient.

-Investigate the possibility of the food additive tartrazine contributing to the eczema and, if it does, eliminate it from the diet.

-Eat fatty fish like salmon, herring, and mackerel at least twice a week. Some steps to relieve symptoms:

-Do not use hot water for bathing and showering: Use warm water. -Use bath oil to soften skin. Use a nondrying soap substitute instead of soap -Do not use over-the-counter ointments that contain benzocaine or antibiotics.

-Avoid lanolin in skin lotions, cosmetics, cleansers, and the like.

-Try to avoid temperature extremes and any activity that will involve excessive sweating.

-Aerobic exercise is beneficial to eczema and other skin ailments. Just be sure to take a warm shower after exercise to wash away sweat.

-Avoid any oily or greasy ointment that prevents skin from breathing.

-Try to wear cotton and other natural fibers next to your skin with the exception of wool, which you should avoid.

-As stress can exacerbate eczema, practice stress reduction techniques.
