Collectibles: Are You Missing Out On These?

by Daniel Wright

Many people start collections of items that can be re-purposed in the future. Many collectibles are saved for their aesthetic value to the owner. However, some collectors are more interested in passing their possessions on to future generations. And still others start collections for investment purposes, believing the items will eventually be worth more than the current value.

Online auctions are a great way to find the items you need to build your collection. You can find all types of collectibles online. From toys to old advertisements to antique furniture and cars, finding the items you want to collect on the World Wide Web can be easy.

Sports memorabilia is just one type of item or collectible available online. Pepsi, Coke, and Dr. Pepper products from the past are also popular collector's items. Many collectors also shop for baseball cards online. These and many other types of collectibles are available that are inexpensive to ship because they are lightweight. Obviously, it is easier to buy baseball cards from an online seller on the other side of the country than it is to buy a collectible classic car that will be hard to ship.

You can buy various collectibles, as well as sell your older collectibles, on online auctions. Shipping an actual coca cola bottle without damaging it may be difficult, so there are plenty of other Pepsi and Coke items that you can sell without difficulty and earn some extra money from.

Many collectibles are resold online by collectors who find them in local antique shops and flea markets. The World Wide Web offers a global market in contrast to the local market of a brick and mortar store. Consequently, collectibles can often be sold at a higher price online. Where you find a collectible will significantly influence the price you pay for it.

Buying collectibles online has its downside, too. Since you are negotiating for an item without being able to see it first, you are leaving yourself open for fraud if the seller happens to be dishonest. We've all seen people on the "Antiques Roadshow" who think they bought an original item and paid big bucks for it when it actually turns out to be a reproduction that's worth almost nothing. Not everyone online is dishonest, though, so we can weed out many fraudulent deals just by using common sense. Online auctions that offer feedback comments from previous buyers are helpful, and deals that come with a money-back guarantee are also safer bets.
