Information about Burn Scars and Treatment

by Samara Al Romaithi

Burn injuries have multiplied in recent years and are considered a major problem. Fortunately, these past few years have opened up the eyes of many medical professionals who now realize and are beginning to understand the serious problems associated with burns. Statistics say that at least half of burn injuries are preventable. Unfortunately, until we raise awareness and educate people on burn safety, we continue to deal with the after effects of burn wounds which are scars.

Types of Burns

Burn scars depend on the type of burn. The severity of the burn is determined by the person's age, as well as the size and depth of the burn. Generally, burns are categorized by their depth in degrees from one to three. First degree burns are the most minimal in damage and affect only the epidermis, the surface layer of the skin. These cause pain, redness and swelling. With proper treatment of first degree burns it is possible to prevent burn scars. To treat, the skin should be flushed or soaked and then covered with a sterile non adhesive bandage to protect it from friction or pressure. A second degree burn affects the epidermis and the dermis, the top two layers of skin and can cause redness, swelling, pain and blisters. These burns can damage sweat glands and hair follicles. To heal burns of the second degree, you should elevate the injured area and cover it with a cool moist sterile bandage. Do not apply cold water, compresses, or any type of ointment nor allow the burn to be contaminated. A third degree burn is the most serious as it affects the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis which results in the charring or whitening of the skin, with coagulated vessels visible through the surface. These burns affect so deeply into the skin that they damage skin tissue and often cause the skin to feel numb. Treat third degree burns similarly to second degree, but make sure you get the person to a medical professional as soon as possible.

Types of Burn Scars

The process to heal burns is similar to other wound healing processes, and will almost surely result in a scar. There are three major types of burn related scars: Keloid, hypertrophic, and contractures. Keloid scars will grow beyond the site of injury and are thick and raised. Hypertrophic scars have a very similar appearance but remain within the wound site. Contracture scars are those that cause the skin to tighten which can result in the tightening and limited mobility of underlying muscles and tendons.

Surgical Procedures

Dermabrasion and skin grafts are the two major types of surgical burn scar removal procedures. Dermabrasion is able to reduce the appearance of scars, restore skin flexibility and improve disfigurement. Dermabrasion shaves or scrapes off the top layers of skin in order to smooth it out. This can smooth the surface of the skin, but will not remove the scars. A skin graft is a surgical procedure in which a piece of skin from one area of the patient's body is transplanted to another area of the body. Skin grafts are done under general anesthesia and often require at least 6 weeks and up to a few months to heal. Most grafts are successful, but some may require additional surgery if they do not heal properly.
